While teachers give elementary, middle, and high school students summer reading lists to keep them busy over the summer I figured I could share a few of my favorite sports novels with the 3 sports fans that read my articles on this site.

Rick Reilly - Missing Links

We all know Rick Reilly for his mixture of clever, moving, shocking pieces he became known for by writing the back page of Sports Illustrated. Missing Links is a fictional novel about a group of golf addicts. The story features a group of friends that play golf for the love of the game. They play on a dump of a golf course which is juxtaposed directly next to a pristine country club. The main characters decide to hold a competition to see who can play a round on the neighboring course. Reilly is a great storyteller and shows the he can write more than nonfiction with this book. Anyone that appreciates golf will have trouble putting this book down will find themselves laughing as often as they turn the page.

Saturday’s 134th running of the Kentucky Derby saw the favorite and triple crown hopeful Big Brown win in dramatic fashion, and it appeared that horse racing’s popularity was on the rise.

However, a quarter mile after the finish line, second place Eight Belles went down with two fractured ankles and was euthanized on the track a few minutes later. A day of good fortune had turned ugly, and everyone looked for someone to blame.

After the race, PETA and other animal-rights groups jumped on jockey Gabriel Saez, saying that he should be suspended because he knew the horse was injured before the end of the race and kept pushing him instead of pulling up. This assumption is completely unwarranted and unfair to Saez.

Let’s travel back in time to February 20, 1973. Richard Nixon is the president of the United States, ESPN did not exist, and the current head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Lane Kiffin, was still over two years away from being born.

Brandon High School’s wrestling team also lost to Manatee 29-18 that night just outside of Tampa, Fla. Why does this mean anything, better yet, why the hell do I know this? Because this was the last time the Brandon wrestling team lost a match before losing on January 5 of this year.

The ceremonial first pitch between the Yankees and Red Sox will not take place at Yankee Stadium when the two battle it out in the Bronx this week. The pitch will not even take place on Earth.

With the Office returning to television this Thursday I thought I’d post this article.

Andy Bernard = John Rocker

Why it works: Both guys are complete headcases. Rocker was known for his temper. Andy got sent to anger management for punching a hole in the wall. While John plays baseball, Andy has been known to be a runner. They both think they are funny and nobody else seems to think so.

2nd place candidate - Andy Roddick: Same name. Both have a temper (see pictures above). Athletic, Bernard is a runner; Roddick plays tennis.
