Here are both sides to the argument. Enjoy.
FIRE TED THOMPSON:

Ted Thompson has made some pretty terrible decisions in recent history. Last season Brett Favre lobbied for the Packers to trade a late round pick for Randy Moss (Who ended up leading the NFL in touchdowns and was second in receiving yards) and the Packers did nothing. Today, Friday July 11th, news has broken that the Packers organization told Brett Favre, arguably the best thing to ever happen to Green Bay that he is no longer welcome and that they would rather have Aaron Rodgers under center than the 3 time MVP. This petition is to show show that Packers and football fans in general have realized that Ted Thompson should be fired immediately. There are plenty of other poor decisions that were made by Thompson but these two are the obvious terrible judgment calls.

DONT FIRE TED THOMPSON:
[Editors note: The author of this post has since backed down on his stance and has declared that if Thompson does not allow Favre to compete in an open competition, he should be fired. See comments below.]
Making a petition to not fire someone who has a job that is very secure seemed ludicrous to me, so instead I decided to write a column about why Packers GM Ted Thompson should keep his job. How exactly does a man who has been with a team since 2005 that was going to be over the salary cap the next season turn said team around to being one of the youngest (as of 7/12 the final rosters have not been set) teams in the league and have that young team be the reigning NFC North Champions along with being under the salary cap?
Remember the “glory” days of the new millenium when in 2000 Packers fans were introduced to Mike Sherman the former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator who had a Super Bowl caliber team dropped in his lap. These were the days where Packers fans had the leagues only 3-time MVP at the helm of their west-coast driven offense and defensive studs like Darren Sharper roaming the frozen tundra. What exactly did Mike Sherman do with the teams beginning with his 2000 team? Well the Packers went a combined 53-27 with three consecutive NFC North Championships yet the Packers were 2-4 in the playoffs during his tenure. In the end the playoff record would overcome Sherman, along with an injury plagued 4-12 final season, so following the 2005 NFL season he was fired. Prior to being fired at the beginning of the 2005 season Sherman would lose his position as the General Manager of Football Operations for the Green Bay Packers and Ted Thompson would enter bringing hope to Packers fans everywhere. It may not have sent shock-waves throughout the league, but Thompson had worked side by side with former Packers head coach Mike Holmgren. Together they would build a team that was second only to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2005 season, his first year with the Packers.
How exactly did Thompson turn an aging franchise into a youthful Superbowl contender? Through the draft as many GM’s have, but it’s not just how he drafted, but it’s how many times he has drafted. 43 players have been drafted in the four years that Thompson has been given full control of the Packers. It has now become a staple on draft day to see the Packers make multiple transactions throughout the course of the draft. There have been 23 trades involving draft picks in the four years Thompson has been running the show. He has amassed a multitude of players that get ample playing time that were taken in the later rounds such as Brady Poppinga starting linebacker (4th round), Mason Crosby starting kicker (6th round) as well as many others.
Not only has Thompson drafted quite well, besides what looks to be a bust in Justin Harrell in the 2007 NFL draft, but he made a blockbuster trade on September 1st of 2007. Here is the press release: http://www.packers.com/news/releases/2007/09/01/1/
Ahhh I still remember the day the Ryan Grant trade happened. People were calling ESPN and requesting they stop talking about the Grant trade because they wanted to know more about who was going to finish with the worst record in baseball as the Devil Rays (name at the time, please don’t charge me a dollar) were playing the Yankees and with Grant all over the board there just wasn’t enough Devil Rays vs. Yankees coverage…oh wait.
So before you sign your Herbie Hancock towards the frivolous attempt at firing Ted Thompson please remember the “glory” days of the new millenium. Ed Donnatell could still be our defensive coordinator and Mike Sherman could be drafting quality starters like Ahmad Carroll and Jamal Reynolds…oh wait.

Well 12 and 4 is pretty good (when you talk about our 4-12 season) haha I know you hate that Lake.
This Guy is not working on on 8 cylinders, Brett has been the bread and butter for this organization for the past 16 years and to go down in the hall of fame as the greatest QB in Packer history maybe NFL. You Take him back no matter what Common Sense, but he doesn’t have any!
I personally feel that Favre has used up his chances with not informing the organization of what he was going to do for the past 3 years. Those were fine with me and if he had still been yanking around the organization like he had in the past I would be fine, but he RETIRED! He retired FOUR MONTHS ago people!
I’d be fine with taking him back if he had retired a few weeks ago, but no he had to wait four months.
He changed his mind moron. Is the goal of the NFL to win the Super Bowl or not? Seems pretty clear what a winning GM would do.
I’m just looking for a spot to vent how much I think Thompson sucks. You have a proven quarterback and now as the story unfolds you see there is really not a lot of love for Favre from his office nor any intention on his part to keep him around. Thompson is a jerk. He sucks. I hate him. Rodgers is the future! The guy seems nice but he hasn’t proven anything in the world of NFL quarterbacks. Let’s gamble on him! Good job Ted.
To top it off. Thompson slaps Ryan Grant in the face with a weak contract causing him to hold out of training camp.
Thompson has repeatedly misused and abused the power of his position. That alone is enough reason to fire him — not to mention the other countless number of offensive and arrogant moves he’s made. He actually let the public believe that Favre had contacted the Vikings on a Packer-issued phone when in fact there is no such thing as a Packer-issued phone. So I guess slander would be another legal reason to fire Thompson. He may have done some reasonable drafting, but that doesn’t qualify him to be GM. Perhaps he should be demoted to recruiter it that’s his supposed strength. Certainly his strength is not in people management or problem solving! He’s taken the honor out of Green Bay and turned his back on the GBP’s greatest asset — Brett Favre. If the NFL business is winning, then how could any idiot make such a ridiculous decision? I wish my business issues were so difficult! He’s an ego-sick, pathetic excuse for the GBP “leader.” Nothing says self-important like the name Ted Thompson.
I now am feeling not so high on Thompson as I was at the time I wrote this article. If he does not let Favre compete for the starting job then he really does deserve to get fired.
I still wish none of this would have happened though with either Favre just staying retired or not retiring at all.

Email teddy boy and let him know how much he sucks
Congratulations Ted Thompson –Green Bay is now irrelevant to the rest of the nation again. Although the Packers fans will continue to be loyal and rabid, the only reason the rest of the country had any interest in you for the past 15 years wore number 4 and played with a youthful enthusiasm that was refreshing and entertaining. It is apparent that you have wanted him to be gone for the past 3 or 4 years. Viewing the way the coach interacted with him on the sidelines, it appeared that he was tolerating him rather than enjoying coaching him. I believe he retired in the first place because GB made it clear by their actions that he was not really welcome to continue on (remember the “accidental” retirement release on the GB website).
I know it is a business but it still seems morally wrong for GB to not give him his outright release when they no longer wanted him. It would seem that the NFL vets of over 10 years should have some veto power over which teams to which they could be dealt so that they could at least have the opportunity to try to catch on with a contender when their current employer no longer wants them.
Please tell me how we are going to get TT fired and MMc when we our petition didn’t help Brett. I will not be watching a Packer game ever again. I know let’s all fans boycott Packer games and watch the JETTS. We are the shareholders and the fans who come to the games and would do anything to watch Brett. He made football fun to watch. We’ll never have that boyish proud enthusiasm that we always cheered for Brett. What is the matter with those people. Aaron Rogers should have went to them and said to give Brett the year. My gosh out of 20 throws he had 20 interceptions.
It is a sad time for football.
Que se large este perro inutil de Thompson, ya que apesta!!!
Favre4ever!!!!!
I think the whole situation stinks! I am not on any side but what I am bitter and pissed off the way management of the packers has treated him in this situation it’s real simple…
Play him or cut him! if he isn’t good enough to start for the packers let him go to the Vikings or any other team that he wants ! I think he deserves and earned it! And if he comes back and kicks that packers asses then tough shit move on! Or who knows he might throw 3 piks who knows and who cares!(so swallow your pride and cut him!) Aaron Rodgers is your guy.
That’s what pisses me off! He never held out, never demanded more money, gave his heart and his life to the organization, and the game and this is how they treat him? Not to mention he started every game. Screw them! (Hurry up retire his number FedEx his locker down to MS, don’t get anyone in free agency run him out of town thanks Ted Oh I know draft A Rod, Justin Herrell, and jordy great draft picks or perhaps draft the best available player in the first round).
Having a good QB in the NFL is tough and if you are lucky you get one! If it wasn’t for Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren who rebuilt the organization we would still suck! Just like we did after Vince left. That’s the way I see it …many coaches and management have been riding the Favre coat tails for years! Who’s going to bring in players into Green Bay now Samkon Gado?
I rejoiced and cursed at Favre through out the years! But one thing is for certain the packer organization no longer has any class as far as I am concern! You or anyone will never convince me that he was run out of town, Ted Thompson’s ego is bigger then his brain and he, Mike and Mark will go down in packer and NFL history as the stupidest managers of all time.
We were one game away for the big dance I would have given Brett one more try to redeem himself one would wonder if Moss would have put us over the edge thanks Ted!
the problem is ted ted thompson thnk it don’t mater the fans well still come to the gaem so we should make the first monday night football game with a black out and don’t show up and then the bord of director well lisen money talk to all rich people.
Marylin, how could you propose to boycott Packers games! I think Ted should be fired, but now that this is over, Packer fans should be fully supporting Aaron Rodgers. What is starting to piss me off even more than Thompson is seeing Packer fans threating to become Jets fans. I was at the Packers preseason game against the Bengals and saw two people with a sign that read “Where ever Favre goes, we go” and it had Jets stuff all over it. I wanted to turn around and shout “Get the fuck out of Lambeau field and move to New York then!!”. And I read that at the Packers family scrimmage (although it was mostly cheers by the preseason game), half the people booed Aaron Rodgers when he was introduced! Are you kidding me!? This guy has patiently waited for three years without complaining at all about not starting and not demanding a trade after nearly being the number one overall draft pick in 2005. He is the only person involved that has handled this situation perfectly, and I apploud him for that. Although I wish Favre was our quarterback and I think Thompson is an absolute imbasolt, don’t make Green Bay look even worse by ruining the reputation of Packer fans as being the best and most loyal fans in the NFL. True Packer fans would be cheering their hearts out for Aaron Rodgers right now, and only booing Ted Thompson when you get the chance. Don’t sit there and show you’re disgust for Thompson by booing Aaron Rodgers, that is just wrong. You can hope Favre does well, and you can hope the Jets do well, but if you say you’re going to become a Jets “fan” and get a Favre Jets jersey, etc. then you need to look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, “Was I ever really a Packer fan to begin with? Or am I just a Brett Favre fan who isn’t really committed to any NFL team?”. Packer fans have been the most dedicated and loyal fans in the NFL since the league started, but it has started to disgust me how some of them are starting to like Favre more than the team. Favre is my favorite athlete of all-time and he is my hero in life, but his time will eventually pass. Whether Favre, or any player for that matter, is there or not, the Packers will always play a football season every year. Those of you who are not a Packer fan first and a Favre fan second are not real Packer fans. As a Packer fan, the way some of “us” are acting is completely embarrassing, and it has come to show me that a real Packer fan may not be as common as I once thought.
I’ll be @ the next stockholders meeting demanding Thompson’s resignation. I’ll make an effort to meet him there too.
let’s just see which way he has turn the team around this time. from a 13-3 team back to what he started with a 4-12 team. he is the biggest idiot in football managment. he should be fired right now!
I watched the last two packer preseason games, I know they put a poison pill clause in bretts trade contract but did they also put a “oh crap what were we thinking can we have Brett Favre back” clause?
Pretty nice site, wants to see much more on it!
